Stigma, Social Media and Schizophrenia

Stigma, Social Media and Schizophrenia

Greetings Peeps!

I hope your day is going good!! Mine is going great actually! *I wrote this yesterday at night lol* So today I’m going to make a type of post I don’t usually do, and that is social topics!

I mean, I talk about society sometimes, but I mean, I don’t talk a lot about my opinion on things that are going on or abstract concepts, and I think I should do it more.

Stigma, Social Media and Schizophrenia:

Most people might think that society has been becoming more open when it comes to taboo topics like racism, religion, sex, death… But the truth is there’s still a lot to change.

Everyone’s mind is different, and as much as we think we’re capable of feeling empathy, it seems like we can’t. When we hear the words “mental illness”, for instance, often the words “crazy” or “dangerous” come to our minds, and many times we come to that conclusion without enough information.

People suffering from Schizophrenia, for instance; see, hear and even feel things that aren’t there. When they’re having a hallucination, they can’t know they’re having it, as their senses tell them otherwise. It doesn’t mean they’re crazy, they can’t help it, they’re totally conscious like us. But Hollywood movies represent these people as psychopaths, crazy, impulsive and even aggressive, when a schizophrenic has the same possibilities of killing someone than a “normal” person.

There are misinterpreted concepts like this and many more just with mental illnesses. The ones dealing with the most stigma are Schizophrenia – as I said before -, Anxiety, ODC (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) among others…

Especially with social media, when we’re supposed to be closer to information sources, a lot of times we interpret things the wrong way. Instead of helping, we could even be worsening issues. My opinion is that we do research to judge sensibly.

*it seemed longer on the essay paper* 😅

Actually this was first written in a Literature class essay we had to do, we had to talk subjectively about a topic, I liked so much how it turned out I wanted to share it with you. Thanks *insert teacher name here* for the assignment! 😜 #ShesNotGonnaReadThis

Did you like my essay-article thing? Do you think social media is helping society? Do you know anyone with Schizophrenia? Is it you case? Any other stigmatized illness? Is Hollywood ruining society? Tell me everything!!!

I hope you liked this post as much as I liked making it, it was fun! I’m totally making more of these! I hope you have a great day/night and week! I hope to see you on my next post!

Massive hugs!

  1. Or if you have OCD people challenge you if you don’t constantly clean things because it’s the only type of OCD they know. In actual fact the obsessions and compulsions can have absolutely nothing to do with cleaning.

    • Oh yeah true, at first I though they wanted everything to be perfect, that involved cleaning, but people can have different obsessions, I guess. Do you have OCD?

    • Yes I used to not know what OCD was exactly, then I got it. BAM. Now i hear people say Oh I have OCD and its like ummm thats just being clean. OCD is the intrusive thoughts that run through my head and I get obsessed with 😦

      • Yeah, it’s annoying, but I try not to take it personally. They really don’t know any better. They’re confusing the personality disorder and the mental disorder. The personality disorder fits “perfectionism” better, but that’s a extreme oversimplification.

      • Yeah I don’t have OCD or any of those things, but I feel kinda mad when people are like omg I have OCD when they don’t, cause there’s more to OCD.

P.S. I’m so sorry for not having replied in a long time 😦

  2. I know someone whose had Schizophrenia what’ve learned is that the person isn’t aggressive but, rather the medicine they receive makes them display anger and aggressive because it’s one of the side effects. The media’s portrayal is based on the negative aspects that don’t take into account the other factors.

    • I didn’t know they became aggressive with medication, I thought it made them sleepy and slow, how weird.
And yeah, like you said, people only focus on the negative aspects that not always even happen.

  3. I LOVE this. And I agree. The attitude to Schizophrenia makes me upset because it’s a form of blaming someone for something they can’t help. It’s categorising people with an ILLNESS as inherently dangerous and that frustrates me so much.
I like your opinions on things; keep giving them and using your voice!

  4. Thanks for this great article!
It reminded me of a quote by G. K. Chesterton : “Religious liberty might be supposed to mean that everybody is free to discuss religion. In practice, it means that hardly anybody is allowed to mention it”.

It seems to me that because our society if becoming more “open” and able to discuss almost any topic, people spontaneously restrain themselves from freely expressing their opinions.
SNS has enabled us to talk about taboo topics. However, the fact that ANYONE can see what you say and you can never undo what you’ve said makes you feel like being monitored 24/7… I wrote about it in my post ( https://8ampickles.wordpress.com/2018/02/25/freedom-of-speech-and-blockchain/ ), maybe SNS turned our society into “open” society by making individual not even want to mention certain topics…

So again, thank you for posting about this core issue in today’s world, it gives people an opportunity to reflect on things they have been trying to ignore…

    • Omg thanks so much for the comment, I’m extremely sorry for the late reply. 😦

I’m so glad you liked this post, it means so much, I feel like people should be free to talk about whatever topic they want, especially these topics that are so important, the problem is that they not always say very politically correct things or are even right. :/

I like the quote, thanks for sharing it! 🙂
And I have to check out your post!!!!!! 😛

Thanks so much again for your comment, I really appreciate it!!!! ❤

    • Yeah, I think it’s because people hear that “this” person with “this” illness did “this thing” and then they get scared of everyone with that illness. People only focus on the bad things.
