What I Think of Philosophy Class

what i think of philosophy class

Greetings peeps!

I hope you’re having a great day!! So today I thought I could talk about actual educational stuff, hehe! So I’ll be talking about my philosophy class and my thought on it.

Because this year is the first year I’m having Philosophy class and you know… I don’t know, I thought it’d be fun, don’t judge me!! So here goes nothing…

DISCLAIMER:

I’m not making this post to insult or discredit or offend anyone. I respect my philosophy teacher a lot and I thin he’s a very capable man and I find his classes very interesting. I’m just speaking in general. I’m not throwing shade at anyone nor anything, if that makes sense.

My Thoughts on Philosophy Class:

Ok so I have to say the subject is interesting, because it’s mostly like History and a little bit of science and a little bit of politics and just a little bit of everything.

TEXTS

What I don’t understand is how when the teacher gives us sheets and tells us to interpret them or like share our opinions on them…. IT’S HELL! Why?

CAUSE WE DON’T UNDERSTAND SH*T!!!!

Random reader: But Anna, you said we’re all capable of doing anything and we’re all as smart and “not understanding at all” is an excuse and blah blah…

Yeah, but what I mean is that they give us paragraphs in which we have to know what 20 words per sentence mean and there’re some references to cultural things we’d never heard of before, you know?

Lemme show you an example:platos apology

I got it from: http://www.sjsu.edu/people/james.lindahl/courses/Phil70A/s3/apology.pdf

And ok ok, maybe this isn’t the hardest text to understand, but it’s not the easiest thing ever. I just couldn’t find a text that was so impossible to understand.

Well, just found a harder example:plato on socrates death 2

Source: http://www.mc.maricopa.edu/~davpy35701/text/platodeath.html

And I know both texts are related, shut up!

So yeah. That’s all. Do I really need to go further? I mean, what the hell is that? I don’t care whether Plato or Socrates or Aristotle or their mothers said exactly that!! I wanna know what they’re trying to convey, for god’s sake!!!!

I mean, can philosophers or teachers not adapt these things in a way that we can understand without having to look up word by words or having to read it 20 times?!

I think what peeps do in the philosophy career is basically read all of these things and learn how to understand texts like these. Cause I don’t see the point otherwise.

Q&As

So the teacher sometimes explains us something and then either asks us a question like: What did I just mean? Can you find the correlation between these 2 concepts? Can you summarize this long @$$ text? What’s the main idea?

And be basically teaches us common sense and understanding adult language.

I just suffer a lot sometimes with questions because no one knows sh*t and you never get things correct 100%. I mean, all that matters supposedly is that you try and participate. But why is it impossible to get things totally right?

I have a classmates who has answered 100% correctly in 2 occasions. I mean, respect!!  🙏🙏 And it’s like, how did you do that? As if it were like a superpower or something.

EXAMS

So I’ve only done one exam so far on this subject, and it was multiple choice. It might seem easy, but it was actually quite hard. Cause a every answer made sense and also no answers seemed the correct one.

Here’s an example, this is actually an irl question we had:

In dialectics:
a. We look for the concrete, what results in local interest.
b. We seek relentlessly for contradictions in argumentation.
c. Monologues are fundamental.
d. All of them are true
e. All of them are false

I know, what in the freaking hell.

The correct answer is b. It’s funny cause nothing makes sense to me 😂 To me all of them are true. 😂😂😂

Final word:

Philosophy is cool, cause it’s culture about everything around us and it talks about ethics a lot. But I think it’s totally unnecessary to put things so difficult and transmit knowledge in a way it almost seems like you don’t want anyone to understand anything other than you and 5 more people.

  1. I’ve been studying Plato, Aristotle and Socartes at university last semester and I completely agree with you!!! It’s so hard to understand what the texts actually say – I usually just end up watching summaries on YouTube because I can’t understand the actual texts 😂 and I can never answer the questions in class either – really dreading the end of year exam!
